Breathe New Life Into Old Consoles with Bringus Studios

Bringus Studios Feature

Our beloved gaming hobby has always had a segment of avid fans looking to push boundaries in fun and unique ways. Modding takes an existing product and modifies it in a variety of ways. Modding games is one possibility, bringing new ways to experience a game. But it can also include modding hardware, including adding homebrew software to accomplish things not originally intended. And that brings us to Bringus Studios (see what I tried to do there?). I’d never heard about Bringus Studios up until a couple months ago. It was my youngest son, who is an aspiring modder himself, who brought my attention to Bringus Studios. It was some of Bringus Studios older Wii modding videos that really sparked my son’s interest and since then he’s gone on to mod our Wii to do everything from ordering Domino’s Pizza to emulating Windows 3.1. Bringus Studios YouTube channel, along with Jon Bringus YouTube channel, feature a vast assortment of mods spanning generations of game consoles, PCs, and other various electronics. And it’s time we showcase some of this awesome work.

NOTE: Some of the modifications/modding included in this list and on Bringus various channels might navigate a sort of legal grey area. They can also come with a variety of risks, such as bricking consoles/hardware if done incorrectly. Consider this article for entertainment purposes only. If you decide to take up modding, please don’t email us if you brick your classic console. We also can’t help you if a team of angry game company lawyers start knocking on your door.

Even if you’re not interested in modding, I promise you’ll be entertained by Bringus’s sense of humour and, who knows, you might even learn a thing or two. Let’s take a look at some of our favourite Bringus modding videos.

A Modded Dreamcast is the Best Dreamcast

Remember that final console that SEGA released before it decided to leave the hardware business and focus exclusively on making games? Yeah, the Dreamcast. I never had one, and as Bringus so eloquently notes, statistically, you probably didn’t have one either. It had some neat ideas and some solid games, but overall, it just wasn’t enough to keep SEGA in the console business. If you were one of the rare Dreamcast supporters and still have that final SEGA console in your possession, have we got an idea for you! Mod it!

Gaming on an Xbox Toaster

This next mod is for folks who are really ambitious and enjoy eating toast. Imagine taking the Xbox Series S Toaster and turning it into a functional gaming PC. You’re still thinking about toast, aren’t you? Just watch the video.

Nobody Knows I’m Gaming Right Now… Secretly Gaming in Public with the XREAL Air 2 AR Glasses

Adulting sucks. Going out in public, being around people, navigating grocery aisles. How many times have you stood in a check out line as your brain screams “WE SHOULD BE HOME GAMING!” as your soul slowly dies? With a little Bringus ingenuity, you can now play games on your Switch, in public, without anyone even knowing you’re gaming. Pro tip: Don’t do this while driving to the grocery store. Or driving anywhere for that matter.

I Played Counter Strike 2 on the PS4. It’s as bad as it Sounds.

Enjoy Counter Strike 2? Own a PS4? Want to combine both with awful results? Of course you do! Bringus will show you how.

Can You Use 8 Phones to Play 16-Player Mario Kart Double Dash?

Imagine you and 15 of your friends playing one of the greatest kart racers in history locally? Ya, I don’t have a double-digit number of friends either, but hey, let’s continue this thought bubble anyway. The process to accomplish this as Nintendo originally intended is an incredibly costly venture. It’s probably why not too many folks have experienced 16-player Mario Kart Double Dash. But Bringus Studios has an idea so crazy, it just might work.

Your Wii Can Play This (And Much More)

The Nintendo Wii was a wild time in gaming. It combined Nintendo’s iconic library of games with motion controls and was able to market to a massive audience worldwide. Nintendo struck gold with the Wii, and we’re still seeing the positive effects of this with the Nintendo Switch 2. Needless to say, there are a lot of Wii’s in the world, and it stands to reason, you have one kicking around somewhere in your basement. This video from Bringus highlights a variety of fun mods that you can do with the Wii to breathe some fresh new life into it.

And that’s a wrap on some of our favourite Bringus gaming mods, but to be honest, we barely scratched the service. The man is a genius and he has oodles and oodles of more great content on his Bringus Studios channel and his Jon Bringus channel. So spend an afternoon or two watching his content. It’ll either inspire you to do something wacky with your gaming hardware, or you’ll just walk away knowing a heck of a lot more about how these gaming consoles work.

If you’re feeling extra generous, you can support Bringus Studios on his Patreon, which provides early access content, live streams and more. And if you’re a fan, be sure to grab some sweet swag from his online store. My son’s a huge Bringus fan, so I snagged a shirt and sticker pack for his birthday – I’ll also take this opportunity to thank Bringus Studios for their amazing customer support.
