Feel the Nostalgia in Ratcheteer DX
Developer Shaun Inman and publisher Panic have announced that Ratcheteer, originally a standout title from Playdate Season One, will be reimagined for PC, Mac, and Nintendo Switch in 2026 as Ratcheteer DX. The updated edition introduces full-color visuals, modern platform support, and a variety of new features. All while preserving the charm of the original crank-driven adventure.

Ratcheteer DX is a lo-fi yet expansive pixel art action adventure taking place in a frozen world. Here, humanity lives underground due to an endless winter. You play as a young mechanic and explore dungeons and regions full of hidden tools, kind strangers, and formidable bosses. The story unfolds gradually, with each new piece of equipment unlocking both unexplored pathways and deeper insight into the mysterious setting.
“Ratcheteer DX starts in the dark. No power, little context, less direction. Each tool you collect unlocks not just new areas, but sheds new light on its story,” says Designer and Developer, Shaun Inman. “I wanted the player’s understanding of the world to grow apace with their ability to navigate it. Originally imagined in stark black and white, bringing the game to PC and console was a chance to rediscover that world in color and to share it with new players who love classic top-down adventures where the joy comes from finding your way, not fighting for survival.”
The DX edition adds visual filter options, including a sharp monochrome mode that mirrors the Playdate aesthetic and a nostalgic Pea Soup Green filter inspired by early handheld adventures. It also features an uncompressed CD-quality soundtrack and support for ten new languages.
With its atmospheric world, layered storytelling, and thoughtful updates, Ratcheteer DX will reach new audiences while remaining faithful to its roots as a playful, discovery-driven adventure.
