Grounded 2 Breaks Original Game’s Steam Record Within an Hour of Launch

A Flying Start For Grounded 2

Grounded 2 is off to a strong start, breaking the original game’s all-time peak concurrent player count on Steam in less than an hour. At the time of writing, the sequel drew over 49,500 concurrent players, according to SteamDB, easily surpassing the original Grounded’s peak of 32,012 from 2021.

Xbox commentator Klobrille highlighted the game’s momentum on X, formerly known as Twitter. The numbers are even more impressive considering players can also access the game through Game Pass Ultimate on Xbox Series X|S and PC, or purchase it separately for $30.

Obsidian Entertainment returned to develop the sequel, this time with support from Eidos Montreal. The team revealed the game during the Xbox Games Showcase in June, less than two months before launch. Like the first game, Grounded 2 places players in a backyard wilderness where survival means fending off giant insects and crafting tools, blending the charm of Honey, I Shrunk the Kids with the grit of Rust.

The sequel introduces buggies, which are rideable vehicles that let players move more quickly across the oversized terrain. Although Obsidian considered adding them to the original game, the team decided to implement the feature properly by starting from scratch in Grounded 2.

With its player count already climbing and new gameplay features in place, Grounded 2 shows clear signs of a successful launch.
