In the game, players step into the talons of Hidalgo Bladewing. He is a badass wisecracking owl shinobi armed with Mezameta, a sarcastic shape-shifting sword that transforms into a whip, scythe, or hammer mid-combat. The adventure spans across eight procedurally generated zones filled with neon lights, decaying templesand hidden secrets. It also features an energetic 90s-inspired synthwave soundtrack that keeps the pace high.
Combat plays a major role, encouraging quick thinking and adaptability. Players collect Wing Remnants from fallen enemies to unlock upgrades and unleash special moves such as the Void Crow and Spark Falcon, skills designed to take down hordes of enemies, including the ominous Tengu.
Originally crowdfunded through Kickstarter, Atomic Owl surpassed its funding goal by 160%. It has already attracted attention on the indie scene, winning Best Platformer at the OTK Winter Games Expo 2024. The game also appeared at the Best Indie Games Summer Showcase 2025.
