Save Your Friends in Atomic Owl
Monster Theater Games is set to make its debut with Atomic Owl, a fast-paced hack-and-slash platformer soaked in synthwave energy and retro pixel charm. Launching July 15 on Steam and GOG for $19.99 (with a 10% discount at launch on Steam), this roguelite adventure draws heavily from the SNES era while embracing modern flair and deep replayability.

In Atomic Owl, players take on the role of Hidalgo Bladewing, an Owl Shinobi wielding a sarcastic, shape-shifting sword. The game sends Hidalgo soaring through eight procedurally generated zones, each brimming with enemies, secrets, and chaotic energy. From neon-lit rooftops to decaying shrines, players will slash their way through stylized neo-Japanese landscapes while vibing to a high-energy synthwave soundtrack inspired by the 90s.
Combat is central to the experience, with the Mezameta blade transforming into a whip, scythe, or hammer on the fly. Players collect Wing Remnants from defeated crows to unlock upgrades and gain access to powerful abilities like Void Crow and Spark Falcon, devastating skills used to wipe out swarms of Tengu and other threats.
Originally funded through Kickstarter with 160% of its target, Atomic Owl has already made waves. It won Best Platformer at the OTK Winter Games Expo 2024, and it also featured in the Best Indie Games Summer Showcase 2025. The game’s digital soundtrack will also be available separately for fans looking to carry its retro vibes beyond the screen.
With its slick presentation, sharp mechanics, and humor-driven hero, Atomic Owl looks set to take flight as one of this summer’s standout indie releases.
