Overwatch 2 Devs Are Reworking Doomfist & Orisa for the New 5v5 Format
Overwatch 2 devs are slowly doling out more information about the game’s upcoming beta. According to multiple reports, Blizzard are working on some major hero reworks. Apparently, both Orisa and Doomfirst are getting major update to their abilities. They are doing this to make the two characters fit well with the game’s new 5v5 format.
“Two opposing forces—one benevolent protector of Numbani, the other a mighty successor to the city’s Scourge—are both receiving reworks just in time for Overwatch 2 PvP beta,” they wrote. “Although the new 5v5 team composition will change the way tanks approach team fights, their primary objectives will remain the same: focus on making space for their team, initiate engagements, and peel for allies in trouble.”
Doomfist’s abilities have been converted from Damage hero to Tank. This new version will have less verticality without his Rising Uppercut. This also means that his Rocket Punch will not be as instantly lethal as before. Still, devs are going to add some abilities to make him still capable of slowing down and disrupting the enemies.
Orisa, on the other hand, sounds like an entirely new hero following the update. Devs removed her shield and damage booster ultimate. Instead, she will have a multipurpose javelin that will give high damage.
“Lead Hero Designer Geoff Goodman led the charge on Doomfist’s transition from Damage to Tank hero and Senior Hero Designer Brandon Brennan took point on the Orisa rework,” devs continued. “Let us jump into how both heroes have been tailored to fit the changes coming in Overwatch 2!”
“Overall, they are going to feel brawlier,” they added. “Dishing out damage while utilizing their strong defensive capabilities.”
These reworks are just two fine examples of how devs are evolving the tank role in Overwatch 2’s new 5v5 format. There is clearly more pressure on a single tank to lead the whole team. With that said, devs are following a noticeable trend toward abilities that move the tanks forward, instead of keeping them behind shields.
