Sony and Polyphony Seem To Have AI News Coming

Sony and Polyphony Have AI News Coming Soon

Sony and Polyphony, the devs of Gran Turismo, are teasing some big AI news coming on February 9. I’m not sure what exactly this could be, but it must be somewhat interesting to promote it like this. The teaser they released for this news sure didn’t do much to clear up the mystery.

We do know Sony and Polyphony have been working on AI for a little while now. They wanted to train an AI to drive like an actual human. They had some great success with this over time. The AI was actually able to get within the top 10% on lap times.

It’s possible they have advanced this into something new. The teaser they released ends with the tagline “race together,” and I’m not entirely sure how that pertains to AI. Perhaps it is a play that the AI is more human-like now.

The idea behind this is certainly cool. Give good racers tough offline opponents to practice against or play when they don’t have access to the internet. AI is generally lacking in many racing games as they often follow very set paths. It clearly could be great for Gran Turismo 7.

Humans, on the other hand, are very chaotic. Giving players a much more chaotic and unpredictable force to race against leads to far more exciting challenges.

I guess, for now, we will just have to wait until tomorrow to see what exactly comes from this. It certainly captured my attention, and I’m curious as to just what we will see from an AI presentation from Sony and Polyphony.
