Blasphemous: Wounds of Eventide—a story-concluding DLC for the franchise—will be out on December 9th. Now that Blasphemous fans will be treated to a conclusion expansion, The Game Kitchen is already reportedly hard at work at developing a full sequel for a 2023 launch.

We are so excited to finally announce that we have started on a Blasphemous sequel,” The Game Kitchen said. “The community have shown so much love for the first game and we cannot wait to share more when we can!”

The free DLC slated for a December 2021 release will be the true ending that Blasphemous needs, with the game being originally released to the gaming public in 2019. The animated trailer for Blasphemous: Wounds of Eventide that was showcased in Gamescom 2021 shows the protagonist—The Penitent One—squaring off against new enemies, a spear-wielding nun and a trio of giant crying faces.

Set in Cvstodia, which is a land dominated by rigid adherence to a fanatical type of religion, Blasphemous: Wounds of Eventide looks to be a deeply unnerving experience—especially for gamers who have real-life firsthand experience with overbearing religions. With regards to its gameplay, it seems to be one of the best Metroidvanias of the modern era, with an interesting mix of intense platforming, storytelling, and catchy aesthetics—all of which make the gaming experience unique in today’s variety of video games.

The Blasphemous franchise is a 2D side scroller that combines intense action with light Metroidvania elements. Since its release, the game has received a lot of positive critique for its base combat mechanics, as well as its gorgeous world design and pixel art. The trailer that was revealed at the event showed its superb animation. Sadly, however, Blasphemous fans will have to wait a little bit longer for an actual look at the gameplay since this aspect was not shown in the preview.
