It’s Not a New Tekken Movie, But We’ll Take It
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will soon be welcoming Tekken‘s Kazuya Mishima to the brawl. Kazuya was the original protagonist of Tekken before he fell to evil–or perhaps he was evil all along, and the player just didn’t realize until he was in a position of power. Either way, he looks as intimidating as ever. He’s even introduced carrying a defeated Ganondorf to the edge of a volcano, where he proceeds to throw the Gerudo into the magma. Tekken fans will recognize this area as the Devil’s Pit, or perhaps as the Precipice of Fate. Either way, it’s the place where Kazuya’s father Heihachi tried to kill him in the moment that made Kazuya a monster. And he is most definitely a monster in the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate trailer aired on Day 4 of E3 2021.
It’s not a new Tekken movie, but we’re not complaining. Kazuya comes equipped with his trademark Mishima Style Fighting Karate, a fighting style inspired by real-life Shotokan Karate. It involved a lot of closed fist attacks and counters, so it’s no wonder that the brief showcase of Kazuya’s move set we got shows him batting his opponents around like ping-pong balls. As Masahiro Sakurai noted during the presentation, watching Kazuya fight makes it feel like you started watching a Tekken game.
On top of his lethal martial arts skills, Kazuya will also possess the ability to transform partially or fully into Devil Kazuya, which will grant him great power. While the video doesn’t draw a lot of attention to his potential Final Smash, it may be the full transformation. After all, fully transforming into Devil Kazuya sees Kazuya launch a blast all the way across the screen. Heihachi also seems to be making an appearance, possibly as an Echo Fighter, though Kazuya’s son Jin Kazama did not show up in the trailer. Sakurai has declared that he’ll share more info on Kazuya’s Smash appearance at a later date.
The Kazuya presentation will air on June 28th, 2021 at 7 AM PT/10 AM ET.
