Phil Spencer Wants to Leave ZeniMax Alone
ZeniMax Studios was recently acquired by Microsoft, but Phil Spencer is taking a hands-off approach to the teams at Bethesda, id Software, etc. During a recent interview about the acquisition, Spencer mentioned the amazing track record of ZeniMax and that they’re already doing a great job and he doesn’t want to involve himself too much. Spencer also emphasized during the interview that he wants gamers to have access to content they want on the devices they want it on. Future ZeniMax titles will be released on the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription service, and existing ones will likely be added soon.
“Our plan is to leave (ZeniMax) alone,” said Phil Spencer. “ZeniMax has an amazing track record of building great games. Our goal is to make ZeniMax the best ZeniMax they can be, working individually with their studios on the great platform technology that we have, getting their creators’ feedback into the things that we need to go build.” While ZeniMax covers a broad range of games, it’s true that there’s a general sense of quality among the various studios that they’ve overseen, and Microsoft will apparently let them continue to do their thing.
When discussing Project xCloud and Tim Sweeney’s on-going legal battle with Apple, Phil Spencer mentioned, “Our biggest issue is that cloud game streaming apps aren’t allowed in the way that Game Pass is built for other platforms. For us this is about gamers having great access to the content from the creators they love on the devices that they own.” Phil Spencer takes the responsibility and puts his heart into this shift according to the recent Xbox podcast and is very devoted to this cause.
