Total War Troy ‘Sold’ Over 7 Million Units Yesterday

Epic Games Knows What We Like

Creative Assembly launched A Total War Saga: Troy yesterday on the Epic Games Store. For that first 24 hours, the game was free! Sales were pretty high as a result. 7.5 million kind of high. That might be some kind of record for the franchise, no?

In fact, the series had a lifetime sales total of 20 million prior to yesterday’s launch. With this promotion, their install base has grown by a third. Will this translate into more sales for past and future Total War titles? Only time will tell! At the very least, Epic has already covered the cost of the game’s development, so things can only get better from here.

While the very existence of the Epic Games Store has long been a source of contention, their methods do get results. Rob Bartholomew of Creative Assembly is utterly jazzed about this turn of events at least. “We were optimistic but we couldn’t have predicted this level of excitement. Now we get to welcome so many strategy players — new and old — to experience this incredible saga. We’re very happy.” Perhaps other developers, seeing this level of hype generated in a single day, will also sign up with Epic for their initial releases. Hopefully this turns into actual revenue generation for Creative Assembly going forward.
