The Divisive Game Gets Revenge on the Haters
The Last of Us: Part 2 is a tricky game to talk about. While the game earned critical praise across the board – including a rare 100 rating here at COGconnected – the controversial plotline and LGBT elements have resulted in the game being review bombed within hours of its release. In fact, it received more reviews in a couple of hours than the original got in seven years and for the next big gaming release, Ghost of Tsushima, Metacritic implemented a new policy of only accepting user reviews after 36 hours to prevent the same issue arising, and while we don’t know how much of an effect this had on Ghost of Tsushima becoming Metacritic’s highest-rated game of the generation, it can’t have hurt matters.
But it looks like The Last of Us Part 2 is getting the last laugh over its haters though, as it is now the third highest-grossing game in PlayStation, trailing behind only Marvel’s Spider-man and God of War, both of which have been out for substantially longer than Naughty Dog’s bestseller. On top of being the fastest-selling PlayStation exclusive of all time and the third biggest release of 2020 behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, this adds another feather to The Last of Us: Part 2’s cap.
In other news the game has recently added a new difficulty mode, Grounded, as well as a Permadeath mode, so if you thought the game wasn’t difficult or harrowing enough you can now put yourself through it over and over again.
