Production on Sleeping Dogs Movie May Start Soon

Heading Back to Hong Kong

Big News today for fans of Sleeping Dogs, as actor Donnie Yen (Ip Man, Rogue One: Star Wars Story), has posted an update to his Weibo account alluding to the production of Sleeping Dogs. Yen has been linked to the film for years now, with rumors suggesting he’ll be taking on the role of the protagonist Wei Shen.

Nike Partners senior analyst Daniel Ahmad was first to report on the message posted by Yen. Ahmad said on Twitter:

“Donnie Yen posted to his Weibo (it’s like Chinese twitter) that he is “Excited to start his next challenge” and is preparing for a new movie. Sleeping Dogs is tagged which indicates that filming for the video game adaptation will start soon.”

It’s been noted that this could all be some sort of coincidence, but it seems highly unlikely given Yen’s ties to the film. Only time will tell if this is finally the beginning of Wei Shen’s silver screen adventure.

Sleeping Dogs initially released in 2012 and became an instant classic. While it didn’t fare as well as United Front Games and Square Enix would have hoped, to this day, a loyal fanbase still supports the game. Combining brutal hand-to-hand combat with a story that would rival any Hollywood blockbuster, Sleeping Dogs is the perfect candidate to be adapted to cinema.

Of course, even the biggest productions are still moving at a turtle’s pace due to COVID-19. Rest assured that any film today that doesn’t yet have a director is a long, long way away.
