April 2020 Most Lucrative April in Gaming History
Partially thanks to the success of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and the Nintendo Switch, April 2020 has broken records for the month. April 2020 has officially become the most lucrative April in the history of gaming according to the NPD and Final Fantasy 7 Remake is the software leading the charge, with the Nintendo Switch carrying hardware sales as it continues to be impossible to find on store shelves. Gamers spent $1.5 billion on games and hardware in April 2020, topping the $1.2 billion generated in April 2008. Final Fantasy 7 Remake is available exclusively for the PS4 right now.
According to the NPD, the following games are the best selling titles of April 2020:
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- NBA 2K20
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Resident Evil 3 Remake
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Remastered
- MLB The Show 20
- Madden NFL 20

While this top twenty includes some of the best titles in gaming today, the NPD also released the top ten most successful titles of 2020 in total sales, showing the same titles in a different order:
- Call of Duty: Modern Warfare
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- Final Fantasy 7 Remake
- NBA 2K20
- Dragon Ball Z: Kakarot
- MLB The Show 20
- Grand Theft Auto V

It’s no surprise to see Call of Duty, Animal Crossing and Final Fantasy 7 competing for the top slot but it is a surprise to see Mario Kart 8 Deluxe selling so well. The renowned publisher Take-Two is credited several times on both lists, with Rockstar Games and 2K games under the same gaming umbrella.
