NPD: New Horizons Best Selling Animal Crossing

Switch Sales Soar With Animal Crossing: New Horizons

According to NPD analyst Mat Piscatella, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become the best selling Animal Crossing game in North America. Nintendo Switch consoles are sold out practically everywhere right now and it looks like Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the primary culprit as it’s apparently the second best selling game of 2020, right behind Call of Duty: Modern Warfare. The NPD Group says the Nintendo Switch set a new all-time sales record this March, continuing to cement the hybrid console as a Nintendo powerhouse. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch but new purchasers have an extensive catalog of previous exclusives to enjoy as well.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons

“Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the best-selling game of March 2020 and the second best-selling game of 2020 year to date,” said Mat Piscatella. “Animal Crossing: New Horizons achieved the third highest launch month physical dollar and unit sales of any Nintendo published game in tracked history. Among Nintendo published games, only Super Smash Bros. Ultimate (Dec 2018) and Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Mar 2008) debuted with higher physical software sales in a launch month.”

“Launch month dollar sales of Animal Crossing: New Horizons have exceeded the lifetime sales of all other Animal Crossing franchise games, making Animal Crossing: New Horizons the best-selling game in franchise history,” continued Mat Piscatella. These numbers purely focused on physical retail sales as Nintendo doesn’t report their digital numbers with the NPD, which means that New Horizons is selling even better than the best selling Animal Crossing title of all time. Overall hardware spending came in at $461 million while software, accessories and game cards accounts for $1.6 billion in gamer spending in March.
