Hey Hey Hey! Meow Meow Meow!
A few years ago, WayForward released a joke trailer for a joke game on April Fools Day. This year, they returned, but with an actual game of the joke game. Cat Girl Without Salad was born of a unanimous “I would actually play that” reaction from fans and with a surprise release, it is now available on Nintendo Switch. It looks like anime took acid, in a good way. This game claims to combine all genres of gaming, and while that should be taken with a grain of salt, it does it in a very interesting way.
The trailer shows off 2D bullet hell gameplay where the player takes control of Kebako, a cat girl without a salad. Like many in this genre, there are different weapons and power-ups you can collect, but in Cat Girl Without Salad’s unique way, you will recognize a lot of them. For instance, the “Platformer Gun” shoots a 2D sprite that takes the pose of a very iconic platforming character that totally isn’t Mega Man. The Puzzle Gun with a familiar aiming reticle turns enemies into coloured pods that look like you could match three of them together. The RPG Gun looks less like a bladed gun and more of a gunned blade.
There are a bunch of other weapons that Cat Girl Without Salad has to offer, but you will just have to experience them for yourself. If there was something that would actually make you barf rainbows, this would be it. Cat Girl Without Salad: Amuse-Bouche is available now on Nintendo Switch, against all reason.
