Can You Guess what number one is? Probably
If you haven’t heard the news, HBO is making a The Last of Us TV series! Even better news is that they are getting Craig Mazin (who just came off of the incredible Chernobyl series) to direct it. We’ve seen plenty of bad video game adaptations in the future, but with The Witcher, it’s looking up and up. It’s always a hard balance when adapting video games because the storytelling medium is completely different, especially for movies. TV series definitely gives the room to explore narratives similar to video games, but it still leaves a lot to be considered.
I think something many people are afraid of adaptation is if the writer/director truly understands and appreciates the source material. It’s a fair concern, honestly, with many older film artists might not be interested in games. However, that gap is starting to disappear as we go on, with video games entering mainstream entertainment for young and old. And yes, we can rest easy as Craig Mazin seems like a long time gamer on top of being a fantastic writer/director.
Here is his (more than) top 16 game he posted on twitter:
1. The Last of Us
2. Oblivion/Skyrim
3. Grand Theft Auto IV, V
4. Fallout 3, New Vegas, 4
5. Goldeneye
6. Super Mario 64
7. Bioshock
8. Mass Effect 1-3
9. Red Dead Redemption
10. Half-Life
11. Portal
12. Arkham City
13. Ocarina of Time
14. Star Raiders (1979)
15. Dishonored 2
16. The Bard’s Tale (1985)
The first one shouldn’t come as a surprise, and I’m glad we are going to be having someone who is passionate about the source material writing The Last of Us TV show. I think the skeptics might say that he might be doing it because it’s just good professional conduct, but I’m inclined to believe that he truly loves the game. I mean, it’s hardly a controversial statement for anyone to say that it’s their favourite game. You can say that I’m all aboard the hype train.
