Atlus Confirms Shin Megami Tensei 5 for Nintendo Switch

Atlus Is Actively Developing Shin Megami Tensei 5 for Nintendo Switch

While the developers at Atlus had announced the upcoming release of Shin Megami Tensei 5 for the Nintendo Switch in 2017, very little has been talked about regarding the JRPG since then. It turns out that Atlus is ending 2019 with another minor announcement regarding the Switch exclusive which is the team is still in active development on the game but have no official release date in mind for it at this time. Atlus made the recent announcement in the latest issue of Weekly Famitsu and it’s likely they’ll have something to show us in 2020. The team is also working on Project Re Fantasy: A Fool’s Journey Begins, a brand new fantasy JRPG IP lead by the director of Persona 5 which hasn’t been officially revealed yet, but developers have specifically said it will be a big departure from the Persona series.

Atlus’ end-of-year message in the weekly Famitsu was a great way to reflect on where 2019 has taken them while looking ahead to their projects releasing in 2020 and beyond. Although there’s no official release date for Shin Megami Tensei 5, we do expect to have one by the end of next year considering the length of time the game has been in active development. In December 2018, studio producer Kazuyuki Yamai stated that utilization of Unreal Engine 4 and the teams extensive attention to detail meant that he would like to have more time to finish the game and it’s possible that this minor announcement is evidence that Yamai is perfecting the Shin Megami formula.

Project Re Fantasy: A Fool’s Journey Begins was also announced a few years ago and since then, the developers behind it have kept quiet regarding what gamers can expect from the new IP. Because of the popularity of Atlus titles on the 3DS, we believe the studio can expect tremendous success on the massively successful hybrid console. We’re interested to see how the portability of the console is factored into the development, if at all, because of the quality 3DS titles. Project Re Fantasy has likely received the same attention to detail as  Shin Megami Tensei 5 and will hopefully kickoff a new blockbuster Atlus series.

What do you hope to see from the next Shin Megami Tensei? Which Atlus game is your favorite? Let us know in the comments below!
