PS4 Has Surpassed PlayStation and Wii to Be Second Only to PS2
The PS4 has officially surpassed the original PlayStation and Wii to be the second best selling console of all time with over 102.8 million units being sold worldwide as of now. Within the last quarter, Sony was able to sell 2.8 million units, despite the PS5 being on the 2020 horizon. This sales achievement puts the console right behind the PS2’s 150 million units sold worldwide during it’s lifespan. With the next five PlayStation’s being trademarked, it’s likely Sony will eventually surpass the sales record they set with the PlayStation 2 but until then, the PS4 is a behemoth in it’s own right.
Previously to these latest sales records Sony accomplished, the Nintendo Wii was second to the PS2 with just over 101 million units shipped worldwide. The PS1 comfortably sits at nearly 102.5 million units sold, with the PS Mini being a shell of the console it emulates. Sales of the PlayStation 4 have been winding down in recent quarters, with the Nintendo Switch carrying a console sales lead for several months in a row but this accomplishment proves that Sony could still theoretically surpass their sales legend: PlayStation 2.
Sony’s projections now have the PS4 shipping another 7.5 million PS4 units in the final two quarters of this fiscal year. If that goal is achieved, the PS4’s new lifetime sales would eclipse 110 million. Though Sony is normally giving us Gold and Platinum trophies, the PS4’s sales records already deserve a trophy. The PlayStation 5 is expected to come out during the holiday season of 2020 but the PS4 is clearly still selling well with titles such as The Last of Us II and Death Stranding still set to release for the console. Because the PS5 will be backwards compatible, these gamers who are late to the PlayStation party have nothing to fear about their games being immediately outdated next year.
