Gears 6’s Art Direction Might Be Inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale

Gears 6 Could Be Even Bleaker Than Gears 5

It’s only been a month since Gears 5 launched on PC and Xbox One and The Coalition is already talking about Gears 6. Gears 5 art director Aryan Hanbeck recently spoke about the possible art direction of an upcoming Gears sequel in an interview with the gaming podcast Wassup Conversations.

During the interview, Hanbeck mentioned that he’s been constantly telling his art team to “go watch Handmaid’s Tale” because “the composition, the color, and just the cinematography and symbolism is just off the charts”.

“So I watched [the show] and I’m like, ‘Wow, we gotta find a way to get more of this stuff in a Gears 6,'” Hanbeck also said. The Handmaid’s Tale is a TV show based on a novel about a dystopian America where a select few of women are forced to give birth to children because the world’s fertility rate is in decline. The show is known for having dark, sexual themes and storylines so Gears 6 could be an even bleaker game than its predecessor.

Gears 5 received much praise for not only its story and gameplay but also its visuals. “Environments all look great, with moody lighting and plenty of visual tricks that made my jaw drop,” our review read.

Hopefully, the next Gears game will continue to impress with its visual style.
