Riot Games Joins the Fray of Fighting Games

Throwing Their First Punch

Riot Games, the developer of League of Legends, is making a new game. With LoL firmly holding the top spot on Twitch for most view games, Riot Games is looking to try their hand at a different type of game. Having dominated the MOBA scene, they are setting their sights on the arena of fighting games. This was confirmed at EVO by EVO founder and Riot Games employee Tom Cannon. Not many details to explore, but we can probably expect great things.

Riot Games

In 2016, Riot Games acquired Radiant Entertainment, which was known for the fighting game Rising Thunder. Already having developers with experience making a fighting game, as well Tom Cannon who founded EVO, this game will definitely be a heavy hitter. We could be looking at an entirely new IP here, but it might also make sense to place it within the League of Legends universe. They already have 145 characters to include and adapt to the fighting game.

EVO’s games list is constantly shifting, but seems to keep a list of core games that make returns year after year. Some iterations of Street Fighter, Super Smash Bros., Tekken, and Mortal Kombat appear every year, but a game from the team behind the king of MOBAs could earn a spot among them. Again, there is not much to say other than that it will exist. There is no name, platform, or release date.
