Niantic Hints at Pokemon GO on Microsoft’s Hololens
You’re either dead or living under a rock if you haven’t heard about Pokemon GO by now. The craze that’s not only sweeping the US but worldwide. It’s so big that people are willing to cheat their locations at risk of getting permanently banned just to get a taste. If you’re on a Windows phone you’re sadly being left out of the fun but Windows might not be at a complete loss when it comes to catching wild Pokemon.
Sure, using your phone to hunt down pocket monsters in a pseudo-augmented reality is pretty cool but imagine the possibilities if you were wearing an AR headset. Aside from looking like a giant douchebag (you know it’s true, glassholes anyone?) it might be the most immersive way to experience the thrill of Pokemon GO. John Hanke, the CEO of Niantic hinted during an interview with Tech Insider that proper augmented reality setups like Google Glass and Microsoft Hololens might just be in the works. When asked he replied with a sly, “That may be a fun thing to take advantage of.”
Now as much as Microsoft’s Hololens has been advertised and targeted towards gaming it’s pretty much accepted that its applications outside of that are fairly staggering. Businesses and industries worldwide could capitalize on the technology. Dropping something like Pokemon GO onto the platform could do wonders for its sales to regular consumers, though. Perhaps this is a snippet of hope for Windows phone users (all 134 of you or so) to see the game make it to their devices, but more than anything can you think of a cooler way to go hunting? Save your pennies Poke-trainers, this kind of tech doesn’t come cheap.
