The 3 Best and 3 Worst Games From October 2016

3 Up, 3 Down October Edition

October was absolutely an amazing month for games. Most recently, EA shattered my expectations when they released Titanfall 2 and Battlefield 1. I honestly though both of those games would end up being a disappointment. But I was dead wrong as they both received a slew of positive review scores. Microsoft started the month out with a bang when Gears of War 4 dropped and 2K should be pretty proud of the month they had with Civilization 6. Last month there was something for everyone and I cannot quite recall a month where so many triple A games were released in fine form. In other words, none of the games were broken. How fantastic is that? Enough blabbering from me, let’s get to the best and worst from October 2016.

The Best

Battlefield 1

Battlefield 1 had a ton of hype behind it. Everyone wanted to see a successful BF game as the last few were released broken and failed to meet expectations. Thankfully, DICE and EA knocked it out of the park with Battlefield 1 and quite easily makes our best of the month list. Our reviewer Rory said it best when he said: “With a great mix of trench and vehicular combat, an impressive and focused array of fun and archaic weapons, maps that dynamically change in natural ways, a fantastic new mode in ‘Operations’ and most surprising of all, an actually decent – if somewhat short – single player campaign, Battlefield 1 offers a fantastic package for shooter fans”. Do yourself a favor if you love shooters, pick up this game now.

I’ll admit the beta had me worried. It sent fans raging and even leaving some to speculate that the game might be delayed. Things were not looking good for Respawn’s latest project. Yet in a remarkable turn-around Titanfall 2 was released and people loved it, including us! It features a terrific single player campaign and a brilliant multiplayer component with more of a focus on customizations. Titanfall 2 may not meet sales expectations and that would be a shame because it’s a wonderful labor of love.

Gears of War 4

Gears of War 4 doesn’t give us anything particularly innovative or earth shattering but the improvements are significant. We remain highly impressed with what Vancouver based studio The Coalition was able to do with Gears 4. The game features stellar production values, incredible action, intense multiplayer, and engaging new characters. This may be the best in the series but I guess only time will tell on that.
