Shenmue 3 Developer Says 4th Game Is Planned

Head Shenmue Developer Yu Suzuki Says That The Third Game Can’t Be The Final One

Shenmue 3, a highly anticipated sequel to a game that came out almost 17 years ago, is not planned to be the final game in the series, according to series creator Yu Suzuki.

“Yes, the end will be open for a sequel. It will not be possible to finish with this third episode,” said Suzuki in a recent interview with GamersFlag, a French gaming news website.

Suzuki also addressed the negative reactions to the trailer that was shown at the 2018 Magic Monaco conference and the recently released screenshots. Many gamers criticized the footage for the game for lacking facial animations and having stiff animations. Eurogamer, a gaming news website, even described the character models shown in the screenshots as “dead-eyed“.

Suzuki explained in the interview that the build shown in the trailer at the conference (which was an extended version of an old trailer that was shown at last year’s Gamescom) is “different from where we are today.” The reason they decided to show the trailer at the conference was merely to promote the game, Suzuki said. He also said that the screenshots “do not show everything.”

Suzuki added that he’d like to show new aspects of the game soon.

When asked about the possibility of modern remasters for Shenmue 1 and 2, Suzuki notably didn’t outright deny that the remasters were in the works. “It’s something I can not talk about for the moment,” Suzuki said.

Even though Shenmue 3 has been in development for nearly three years now, the game still doesn’t have a set release date. The only thing that seems to be confirmed right now is that the game will be coming out this year. In January, Cedric Biscay, one of the producers for Shenmue 3, tweeted: “I wish you a Happy New Year! All the best for 2018! It will be great with the #Shenmue3 release on #PS4 and #PC and many other surprises.”
