Starlink: Battle for Atlas Video Review
Ubisoft’s newest IP seems to be running under the radar what with the recent releases of monumental titles like Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and Red Dead Redemption 2, but overlooking this latest expedition into deep space would be a terrible shame. Starlink: Battle for Atlas combines the epic dog-fighting of arcade space battles with lightweight and highly detailed toys-to-life, building a spaceship on your controller and changing out your parts on the fly. While the Toys-to-life franchise seems dead in the water, Starlink is bringing something new to the table that could revitalize the genre. Starlink: Battle for Atlas follows the crew of the Equinox as they try to help their alien friend, Judge, find his people in the Atlas system. Upon arrival, the crew is attacked by Grax and their captain – St. Grand – is kidnapped for his knowledge on how to make a rare fuel that will power Grax’s long dormant robotic army: The Legion. The games key feature is the ability to build your ship directly on your controller, having parts swapped out and changed in real time in the game. Players can explore a variety of planets and travel seamlessly into space and back to the planet surface as they explore Atlas and try to rally an army to take on Grax and get their captain back.
For those not interested in the toys for the game, the digital versions of the game will unlock these parts from the start, and specific parts or pilots can be purchased through the online store. Weapons and ships can be upgraded with mods for additional buffs and effects such as double shots, increased armor, double jumping, and many more. Starlink has a great soundtrack, fantastic controls, and fast based combat but its dialogue can be campy and repetitive outside of the main story.
