NBA 2K27 Review – Familiar But Refreshed

It’s that time of year again when a new NBA 2K game releases with annual player rating updates, gameplay improvements, new features and modes, and adjustments to existing modes. NBA 2K27 is not much different in that sense. New modes, improvements, and roster updates are what set it apart from last year’s game. Long story short, though, NBA 2K27 remains the definitive NBA video game experience this year, as expected.

This year’s iteration highlights new offensive tools, reworked defensive systems, and expanded dribbling customization. You can find an official list of the various improvements and features on the NBA 2K27 website. As someone who plays most NBA 2K games, but isn’t the type to put in hundreds of hours each year, I still see this as a slightly improved version of last year’s title. The changes may be more significant for competitive and hardcore players, but the game still just feels like 2K.

That said, the gameplay overall does feel more enjoyable. The redesigned hands-up defense and shot contests put more emphasis on positioning, with colour-coded feedback showing the quality of a contest and where it came from. The Dynamic Layup Engine adjusts finishes around defenders, while Rhythm Shooting provides clearer feedback on timing and tempo. These are the sorts of changes that make the game feel better without making it feel completely different.

Play Your Way

The game modes are where different iterations become more noticeable. For the uninitiated, MyTEAM is NBA 2K’s Ultimate Team mode, MyCAREER follows your player’s career, and MyNBA is essentially a franchise mode. Additionally, The W and MyWNBA offer career and franchise experiences for WNBA fans. The W’s new, much-appreciated, Build-as-You-Go progression lets you redistribute attributes as your career develops, making it easier to experiment with your playstyle.

As usual, most of my time was spent in MyCAREER. I’ve played most of these over the years, and after not enjoying the more recent ones as much, this one was not bad. I typically disliked the heavy integration with the Neighborhood and The City, but this year’s does enough to separate the career experience.

Better Together

“Fire and Concrete,” the title of this year’s story, spans 11 chapters, following your player from high school through the G League and into the NBA. MyCAREER also adds co-op, with your friend controlling Trace Miller, a teammate whose build you can customize. The AI takes over when you play alone, and both players earn their own Virtual Currency and XP.

MyCAREER Eras lets you start in five historical periods, from Magic and Bird in 1984 to the Steph era in 2016. Broadcast presentation, locker rooms, and rules change to suit the period. Rosters and trades follow real NBA history, so the appeal is seeing where your player fits alongside those legends.

Player customization has more flexibility too. Badges improve specific abilities, and the Tokens used to equip them can be reassigned. Badge Loadouts let you save combinations and switch them before tip-off, giving you more ways to adjust within your existing build. 

MyNBA receives some new updates as well, including four-team trades and a GM Trust system that makes promises to players matter during negotiations. MyNBA Legacy lets you control an individual player while running the franchise, with descendants continuing the legacy across a dynasty lasting up to 100 years. There is plenty here for anyone who enjoys the management side of basketball.

Another year brings a grim reminder that microtransactions remain a key part of the experience. This is particularly noticeable as someone who experiences the game mostly through MyPLAYER. Virtual Currency (VC) is required to improve your build. This means that wanting to switch or try different builds is a fresh time commitment or a need to spend additional money. Of course, you don’t need to buy VC, earning them instead as you play, but starting over never feels great.

Incremental Upgrades

When you play the NBA 2K games year in and year out, it’s also hard to notice the graphical improvements. Sure, the game looks good, but it also just looks like how I typically recall older NBA 2K games. Of course, minor graphical issues appear as well as some clipping if you really want to zoom in. Some player models also aren’t that accurate, but the fidelity is still there. Arena lighting, crowd reactions, and broadcast presentation help bring everything together, though the overall heavy use of neon is a bit much.

Overall, NBA 2K27 is another familiar release, but the additional ways to play make it more appealing. MyCAREER was the highlight for me, while the other modes provide plenty for different basketball fans to enjoy. The microtransactions remain frustrating, but for those looking for their NBA fix this season, it remains an easy recommendation. Until a worthy contender rises up, 2K is still the best contemporary basketball experience around.
