Tom Hardy as Krieg
Let’s give Tom Hardy another role where he wears a mask all the time. Even though Krieg is at least 7’6″ in Borderlands 2 and Tom Hardy is definitely not 7’6″, he could certainly work the physicality of Krieg. He also has some experience from Venom dealing with dual personalities that Krieg is known for. In the early synopsis of the Borderlands movie, Krieg is Tiny Tina’s psycho-bodyguard. While neither he nor Tina appear in the first Borderlands game, they make the list because that synopsis might still be the plan for the movie, for better or worse.
Ashly Burch as Tiny Tina
Yes, Ashly Burch voices Tina in the Borderlands games, but who could replace Ash as Tiny Tina? Nobody; I won’t have it. Borderlands 2 writer Anthony Burch actually wrote Tiny Tina with his sister’s persona in mind from their webseries Hey Ash, Whatcha Playin’?. Dress her up in a ratty dress and bunny motifs and you got an unstable, thirteen year old demolitions expert with a personality the size of Brick. While Ashly Burch has already shown her voice acting chops by already playing the crazy and unpredictable Tina, she has displayed a much wider range of characters like Chloe Price in Life Is Strange, Aloy in Horizon: Zero Dawn, and Nebula in Telltale’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Karen Gillan as Patricia Tannis
Karen Gillan is an absolute treasure. She rose into stardom playing Amy Pond for several seasons in Doctor Who, before taking on more action oriented roles such as Nebula in Guardians of the Galaxy, and Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame, as well as one of the avatars of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle and The Next Level. Playing the totally (in)sane Eridian scientist Patricia Tannis would be such a treat to fans of both Gillan and Tannis.
Angelina Jolie as Mad Moxxi
Both Angelina Jolie and Moxxi command the screen with both sex appeal and powerful presence. Though Moxxi is not really known for her combat prowess, with Jolie embodying the character, I could see her taking part in a brief firefight scene. Angelina Jolie’s roles in Wanted, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Salt, and the Tomb Raider movies of the early 2000s have prepared her for a role as a sexy gun-enthusiast.
Matthew McConaughey as Handsome Jack
A movie is only as good as its villain, and Handsome Jack is one of the best, if done correctly. Matthew McConaughey has undeniable charisma. He has the presence and talent to be a lovable jerk and then turn into an enraged murderer on a dime. It works. Just imagine: Matthew McConaughey’s face as a mask stapled to Matthew McConaughey’s body. Does anybody really need a reminder of McConaughey’s work? He would crush this role.
There are a ton of other characters in the Borderlands franchise and different generations of Vault Hunters we would like to see on the big screen, but hopefully the movie does not become overcrowded.
