Borderlands 4 Breaks Franchise Sales Records in Its First Month in the U.S.

A Huge Milestone for the Borderlands 4

Borderlands 4 has made a strong impression in the U.S., surpassing its predecessor, Borderlands 3, in revenue during its launch month. According to U.S. video game analytics firm Circana, Gearbox’s looter shooter was the top-selling premium video game in September and debuted as the third-best-selling game of 2025 so far. It led the charts on both Xbox and aggregated PC storefronts.

For publisher 2K Games, the game’s launch marks a new milestone. Borderlands 4 generated the highest first-month revenue in franchise history, nearly 30 percent higher than Borderlands 3. This achievement is tied to revenue rather than unit sales, as the game launched with a standard edition priced at $69.99, a Deluxe Edition at $99.99, and a Super Deluxe Edition at $129.99. By comparison, Borderlands 3 launched in September 2019 at $59.99 for the standard edition, $79.99 for the Deluxe Edition, and $99.99 for the Super Deluxe Edition. It was also a six-month Epic Games Store exclusive for PC, while Borderlands 4 launched across Steam and consoles, widening its potential audience.

While 2K Games has not released official sales numbers, Circana reports that Borderlands 4 is the first title in the series to debut as the best-selling game of its release month. The game also set a franchise record for peak concurrent players on Steam, though performance issues have led to a mixed review rating on the platform. Gearbox has released several patches since launch and plans the Borderlands 4 Day 30 Update later this week to address lingering issues.

In broader industry news, NBA 2K26 leads 2025 sales so far, ahead of Capcom’s Monster Hunter: Wilds. Helldivers 2 debuted strongly as well, ranking fourth on Xbox in September and sixth overall, maintaining the 19th spot in year-to-date sales.
