Additional Development for Borderlands 4
Gearbox Software has delayed the Switch 2 release of Borderlands 4, just ten days before it was scheduled to launch. Originally planned for October 3, the highly anticipated title will now arrive on the platform at an undisclosed date. The delay comes shortly after the game debuted earlier this month on PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PlayStation 5. Gearbox explained that the additional time is for additional development and to polish the Switch 2 version.
In a social media announcement, Gearbox stated that the team “did not take this decision lightly”. And emphasized their commitment to delivering the best possible experience to fans. The studio also noted that the delay would allow them to better coordinate the Switch 2 release with the upcoming addition of cross-save functionality, which they acknowledged is a significant feature for players. The company promised to share the new release date once everything is final.
Greetings, Vault Hunters – We need to share that the release of Borderlands 4 on Nintendo Switch 2 is being delayed. We do not take this decision lightly, but are committed to ensuring we deliver the best possible experience to our fans, and the game needs additional development…

Due to the postponement, Nintendo will cancel all pre-orders for the Switch 2 version. Players can request a refund immediately or wait until Friday, September 26, when Nintendo will process refunds automatically.
Despite Borderlands 4 receiving generally positive critical reviews at launch, PC players have criticized the game on Steam for performance and optimization problems. Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford responded to these concerns, challenging negative feedback and providing tips for improving performance on both PC and consoles. The studio has already released a patch addressing stability issues on PC, and Pitchford confirmed that a PS5 Pro patch is in development to enhance performance on that platform.
The Switch 2 version’s delay reflects Gearbox’s focus on quality and cross-platform features, highlighting the ongoing efforts to ensure that players receive a polished and enjoyable experience across all systems.
