Although there were game of the year contenders released throughout 2023, and June had 3 of them, October easily has the most high profile releases of any month. There are games coming out that won’t even be mentioned in this article, that could’ve taken the top spot in prior months. We have 3 honorable mentions this month. NHL 24 is the latest entry in EA’s professional hockey sim. Sonic Superstars is a return to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise’s 2D roots. 5. Forza Motorsport – October 10
Forza Motorsport barely beat out NHL 24 for placement on The Top 5 Video Games Arriving in October 2023. But the last game in the Forza franchise, Forza Horizon 5, is a serious contender for best racing sim of all time. This latest Forza game is promising more than 500 vehicles and more than 800 upgrades. It’s a strong statement that Forza Motorsport is doing away with series numbering, almost implying that this will be the definitive Forza title, and maybe the beginning of a new quality standard for the series. Forza Motorsport will be exclusive to Xbox Series X/S and PC.
4. Alan Wake II – October 27
Alan Wake II is the sequel to an Xbox 360 classic from 2010. The original was a third person action adventure game, with elements of survival horror. Players will get to play as author Alan Wake, and story protagonist Saga Anderson. Developer Remedy’s last game was the very beloved Control. If they can combine the storytelling quality of the original Alan Wake, with the gameplay quality of Control, Alan Wake II will be a serious game of the year contender. Alan Wake II will be available for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.
