Fortnite BR
Fortnite: Battle Royale is the free-to-play version of Epic’s take on the battle royale genre. It took many by storm this year, and manages to still be a strong competitor to PUBG with its own few twists to shake up the gameplay. Play with a squad of up to four, or try to come out on top in a solo game against 100 others. Fortnite: BR is fun, free, and one of the few games that manages to do the battle royale genre any justice. Brawlhalla
Brawlhalla is a game in the same arena fighting vein as Super Smash Bros and is about as fun as well. It has the same percentage-based life system as Smash Bros, which means the satisfying killing blows that send people flying across the screen is there as well. It focuses more on its unique weapon system than just outright brawling, and has some colourful characters that change up the gameplay with different move-sets and their own individual weapons. There are a few microtransactions that let you buy all the available champions, but you can still play for free and live off the weekly rotations as you grind up currency. It’s a game that’s incredibly easy to just hop on and play a match or ten.
Hearthstone
Hearthstone isn’t exactly pay-to-win, it’s pay-to-skip-all-the-grinding. Obviously spending an obscene amount of money on any trading card game will net you the best cards faster, and you’ll actually be able to use them before the next expansion comes out and makes them practically useless, but I still found Hearthstone plenty of fun to play and easy to get in to without spending a penny. With Hearthstone now available on mobiles and tablets, it’s a game you can take anywhere and allow to ruin your life one game at a time.
Warframe
Warframe is a co-op, or solo, third-person, sci-fi shooter where you can dash madly around levels as one of many different robot ninjas. With one hell of an elevator pitch, Warframe is a game that’s as fun as it sounds, and was given a lot more depth thanks to some major updates over the last year. Despite what some people may say, Warframe is completely accessible to players who don’t want to spend any money. Sure, you’ll need to grind for your gear, and quite a bit at that, but I never considered the grinding to be so soul-sucking it ruined the game for me.
