The Bad

Biomutant

Even the lemons of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from September 2022 were still good games. Biomutant scored a 65/100. It was just a bit of a letdown. The imagery of a haggard warrior cat, and promises of Breath of the Wild-style gameplay, had many players excited to try it out. The main issue is that the game map is gigantic, and constantly has the player travelling to different locations. There were too many times where our reviewer found playing to be too much of a chore. Luckily, Biomutant has a lot of great ideas and mechanics. In the end, our reviewer concluded that Biomutant “falls short of its ambition”.

Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness

Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness is another Zelda-inspired game that falls short of its ambitions. The core gameplay is fun, but there are two story modes. The one that follows the narrative of the manga/ anime does a poor job of utilizing the base gameplay. The original story is much better designed for the gameplay, but is locked behind completion of the story mode that doesn’t work. Our reviewer found this structure created “a lot of garbage to sift through to get to the good stuff”. Made in Abyss: Binary Star Falling into Darkness is the lowest scoring game of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from September 2022, but it still scored a 60/100.

NBA 2K23

NBA 2K23 is on the low end of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from September 2022, because it was, overall, a disappointment. It still scored well, with our reviewer giving it a 79/100. The main issue is that a lot of content is locked behind virtual currency. It is possible to grind all needed VC, but the grind is intentionally more than enjoyable, in order to get players to shell out real money. Our reviewer wrote “while the term ‘pay to win’ does come to mind, NBA 2K23’s gameplay and various modes are still very well done”. Concepts like VC just need to leave the industry. It’s such shameful practice in a full-priced game.
