Gargoyles Remastered is an excellent remaster of a terrible video game. Gargoyles, originally for the Sega Genesis, is a slippery 2D platformer. It’s filled with insane, unfair moments, and doesn’t offer controls precise enough to give the player a chance. While the remaster offers updated controls, visuals, and difficulty options, the core experience is still incredibly unfun. Despite Gargoyles being a flawed game, our review wrote that they “have so much love and support for this project”. And that they’d love to see future remasters, like this one, of classic Disney titles.
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd
Hellboy: Web of Wyrd looks great. The development team really successfully captured the visual style of the Hellboy comic books. The game play is a roguelike procedurally generated action brawler. Gameplay feels plodding, and traversing tunnels of nothing can get pretty boring. There are lots of annoying aspects to gameplay. Our reviewer used this example “Hellboy’s ranged weapon stuns an enemy, but since he can’t run to the demon, by the time he reaches the monster the stun effect is gone”. Hellboy: Web of Wyrd just doesn’t sound fun to play, which makes it an easy candidate of the Bad section of The Three Best (and Worst) Video Games from October 2023.
Tennis On-Court is a VR tennis game that just doesn’t have a lot going on. There aren’t very many gameplay options. Creating an avatar has sparse options. Its gameplay is very sim-like, and very picky about players performing well, which can lead to frustration. Our reviewer concluded “There is potential with the mechanics but the focus on creating a simulator makes the moment-to-moment gameplay feel inconsistent and the lack of modes means you’ll quickly tire of the experience.” It’s important to make a sim still feel fun to play.
