Jessica Jones: 7 Comic Easter Eggs and Tie-Ins

5) The Purple Man

One of my major gripes about Marvel films have been their one-dimensional villains. Loki was fun to watch lay waste to New York in the Avengers, King Pin had a chilling performance in Daredevil as well, but so far Kilgrave takes the cake as the most entertaining and complex villain to date. Killgrave is a sociopathic mind controller that can make people obey his commands, who finds morbidly twisted humor in his wordplay. He’s a refreshing villain that you want to hate but can also sympathize for, given his terrible past. You realize later that he is in fact, out of his mind. In the Daredevil comics, he had a foe named the Purple Man who used similar abilities, through the use of powerful pheromones. His skin turns purple from a nerve gas agent that engulfed him, giving him his special gifts in the process. In the show, he’s often seen wearing a purple suit which is a clever nod to the original Purple Man. Kilgrave used his powers to manipulate Jessica Jones into having an intimate relationship against her will. In the source material, Purple Man controls Jessica Jones but instead tortures her mind, making her do his dirty work. Killgrave 5

6) Hellcat

Patricia Walker is a former child star turned radio talk show host. Her early work included a role in a show called It’s Patsy referred to on a TV screen. Patsy Walker is a vintage comic dating back to the 1940’s. In a time when Archie was thriving and Marvel Comics was known as Timely Comics. As Marvel evolved, they eventually included Patsy Walker into the universe. Patsy became the infamous Hellcat when accompanied the Avengers and found the costume during one of their adventures. What this means is we might have been introduced to another future Defender on the come up. 7) Luke Cage

This is one is subtle, Marvel does a great job of planting Easter eggs no matter how small. One thing is for certain, if a scene looks like a random coincidence; chances are it’s not. We’re introduced with the indestructible Luke Cage tending to his bar duties. Notice how he was wearing a dark yellow shirt, there’s a scene in another episode where he’s wearing a yellow t-shirt as well, these are nods to the original comics where he often wore similar colored shirts. I’m betting we’re going to see more of Luke Cage’s yellow wardrobe in his upcoming Netflix series. They didn’t stop there, after an intimate scene with Jessica Jones he mutters “sweet Christmas” which was his best catch phrase that he used back in the comics. Luke cage 7   Leave it to Marvel to bombard us with hints as to their upcoming plans. Jessica Jones was a great example of how Netflix is redefining Marvel heroes in a bleaker, more realistic context. What a time it is to be alive for comic lovers and we can sleep easy knowing we have years of content ahead of us.
