The good guy, the bad guy and the gadgets are all within your reach.
4.) The Actor
As mentioned earlier, we know that James Bond will be portrayed by an actor who has never been James Bond before. In recent years, fans have suggested Idris Elba take on the role of James Bond – he definitely has the suave, handsome look fans desire in a James Bond. However, the goal is to feature a young James Bond, so unless they intend to de-age Idris Elba like Will Smith in Gemini Man, he might not be the perfect pick. Granted, in video games, de-aging is probably a bit easier, so let’s keep Idris Elba as a potential candidate. Of course, the other option is to use the actor who is eventually picked to replace Daniel Craig – as the upcoming No Time to Die is Craig’s final Bond film. Having a new Bond actor in both the game and movie would allow for some easier cross-marketing. It’s unlikely Project 007 will arrive before 2023, plenty of time for a new Bond movie to also be made.
5.) The Gadgets
You can’t have a great James Bond game without some great gadgets provided by the geniuses from Q branch! James Bond has had a ton of different gadgets, from watches that shoot lasers to pens that explode. Project 007 needs a nice helping of fun gadgets to use. The most obvious will be the laser watch, which James Bond will have on-hand at all times, and will allow him to take care of certain locks and chains throughout his missions. Of course, he’ll need to be inconspicuous about it – if someone sees him using his laser watch, he’ll be discovered. Even more, I really hope they’ll include a cutscene with him receiving his gadgets. It was always fun watching Bond interact with Q in the movies, and it’d be great to see that translated into a game.
6.) The Villain
James Bond stories are often only as good as the actor who plays the villain. In fact, even some of the weaker James Bond movies were often saved by having a brilliant actor taking on the role of the antagonist. Casino Royale had Mads Mikkelsen as Le Chiffre, The World Is Not Enough had Robert Carlyle as Renard, and A View to a Kill had Christopher Walken as Max Zorin. Three examples of Bond movies that would have been way worse had they not had a solid lead villain. For Project 007, we’ll need someone who can pull off a wicked and sinister while maintaining a sort of charm to really drive the story – a true anti-Bond. Here are some of my suggestions; David Tennant (Good Omens, Doctor Who), Michael Sheen (Good Omens, Prodigal Son), Jonny Lee Miller (Eli Stone, Elementary), or Michael Cerveris (Fringe, Gotham).
7.) Multiplayer
The best James Bond games have an incredible multiplayer component. Who doesn’t remember the multiplayer in GoldenEye for N64? In my opinion, it’s quite important that Project 007 offers a brilliantly designed multiplayer mode. I have a few suggestions. First, include all the traditional multiplayer modes gamers have come to expect from modern shooters. This includes free-for-all, team deathmatch, and some objective based modes. Second, include iconic characters from across the James Bond universe. I want the option to play as James Bond, Felix Leiter, Le Chiffre, Xenia Onatopp, Jaws, and of course, Oddjob. And finally, introduce a new asymmetrical style multiplayer mode, like Dead by Daylight, where one player takes on the role of James Bond with a specific objective while the other players take on Bond villains attempting to thwart him.
And that’s a wrap on what I’d like to see in Project 007. The game is still at least 1-2 years away from being released, so IO Interactive has plenty of time to sculpt a brilliant James Bond gaming experience. The most important thing is to focus on what makes Bond games so enjoyable, and the seven items I’ve listed here are critical to that winning formula. I’m confident IO Interactive will deliver, and I can’t wait to learn more about Project 007.
