8 Things You Need to Know About Super Smash Bros. Ultimate

4. All New Graphic Detail

Graphical enhancements are par for the course, and having a game that contains so many characters from so many franchises can be difficult to keep the right feeling, yet with every iteration, Nintendo pulls it off. While the character models we saw aren’t particularly better than the Wii U version beyond a few tweaks, it yet again falls to the smaller details that enhance the game. Each character will now have expressive faces and gestures for whatever is happing to or around them. Nintendo showed this in greater detail during the trailer with DK’s face, or Olimar’s helmet cracking when he gets hit. You know fans of the series will be dissecting every detail they can from that video.

3. New Items

What good is a new Smash entry without new items? Nintendo showed us a few new items during their reveal and the Treehouse footage that followed their Direct, including a star that launches players who pass through it, a black hole that pulls all players towards it, and what is sure to cause serious chaos: the Fake Final Smash. This token looks remarkably similar to the real deal, and breaking it will cause an explosion that sends you flying. They have also thrown in new Pokemon for the Pokeballs and new Assist characters like Bomberman, who will happily drop bombs all over the stage.

2. New Characters

It wouldn’t be a Smash Bros. game without a few new characters, and boy did they deliver. We all knew there were ‘clone’ characters in the form of Dark Pit and Lucina, but Nintendo has decided to coin them Echo Fighters, which sounds decidedly more badass. Adding to the newly titled Echo Fighters roster is Daisy, a copy of Princess Peach. We also got a long look at the new Inkling which wasn’t a surprise given their involvement in the teaser trailer for Smash a few months back. They have their own mechanic revolving around ink and look to be a great addition to the roster. What blew everyone’s minds, however, was the final announcement of the show – Ridley. Yes the space dragon is FINALLY appearing as a playable character in Smash Bros. an entry the fans have wanted for years upon years. After being told over and over it simply couldn’t be done, Nintendo rolled up their sleeves and did it. Will this be the last of the new characters announced? Well, Smash has a tendency to throw us a curveball before release, but even if we don’t see anyone else new this is plenty for us.

1. Welcome Back, Everyone.

Wow. Just wow. How do you even take that announcement? Every single character from the Smash Bros. franchise will be playable in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. All of them, including DLC, have been overhauled, tweaked, remade, rebuilt, and is ready to go in the most epic fighting crossover title yet. Can we even remember everyone who has appeared in the series? Pichu, Roy, Snake, Cloud, Ryu, Mewtwo, everybody is coming back into the fray and it is an announcement like that that is just mind-boggling. We haven’t had a fighting game with such a massive roster in ages, and if Nintendo keeps the previously included customization and upgrading options from the Wii U this will be an unprecedented amount of content. Fans have been frothing in excitement over this announcement at all the possibilities this brings, and with the return of every character it looks like every stage may also be making a return.
