5 Terrifying Horror Games This Year That Will Scare You Silly

Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water – Wii U (North American Release Date Q3/Q4 2015)

The Japanese take their horror games very seriously, and this title is yet more proof.  Already available in Japan, this Wii U game has fans screaming for a worldwide release.  You explore haunted environments, and take pictures of ghosts using the Wii U gamepad.  Lots of dark scenery, night-time locales, and constant rain soak this game in vomit-inducing ambience.  And just this past June, at E3, Nintendo announced that Fatal Frame: Maiden of Black Water would be shuffling its way over to North American shores late in 2015.

The trailer shown at E3 gave us a taste of the creepy visuals, and heart-stopping ghost encounters, that will make this game one of the most promising horror titles of the year. Reminiscent of horror films like Ringu, it has a style that is frightening in a very best Japanese way.  Check it out:

Soma – PC, PS4 (Release Date Sep. 22, 2015)

In development since at least October of 2013, Soma is by Frictional Games, who are masters of the horror gaming genre.  Their previous work, including Amnesia: The Dark Descent (2010) and the Penumbra Series (2007-2008) established them as one the foremost developers of the genre.

Now, in Soma, Frictional takes you down to a new depth of horror, with a nightmarish adventure at the bottom of the ocean.  You don’t believe in ghosts?  Hell isn’t real?  Well, how about the fear of panic, as you race to escape the black depths of the Atlantic, with no clues and no help?  This is the kind of claustrophobic fear even movies can’t do, because this is a feeling that has to be experienced.  Check out our review here.
