Silent Hill f Could Be What the Franchise Desperately Needed
The Silent Hill franchise has struggled to maintain the success of its legendary beginnings. Misstep after misstep, Konami fumbled the series, leaving fans doubtful about its future. The groundbreaking P.T. seemed like a turning point under the watchful eye of Hideo Kojima, but those plans were scrapped, and the demo was pulled from existence. Years later, Bloober Team took on the impossible task of remaking one of the greatest horror games of all time. Against the odds, they not only captured the essence of the original but elevated it into an all-time classic. Now, with renewed excitement surrounding the series, Konami is looking ahead to Silent Hill f, the first new mainline entry in over a decade. Here are five reasons why it could be the publisher’s boldest revival yet.
1. A New Setting
Silent Hill f shifts from small-town America to 1960s, rural Japan. While the franchise has always embraced Japanese horror, the change takes the notion further, incorporating the eerie aesthetics that amplify the suffocating atmosphere. You play as Hinako Shimzu, a teenage girl who has to fight her way through an increasingly twisted world. Although a genre trope, the use of a young protagonist in a haunting world will lead to countless frightening moments.
2. Ryūkishi07’s Vision
With acclaimed visual novelist, Ryukishi07, at the helm, Silent Hill f has the potential to deliver one of the greatest horror stories in the genre. Best known for works like Higurashi When They Cry and Umineko, he has a reputation for crafting complex characters, exploring psychological trauma, and building unbearable tension. His inclusion brings not only credibility but also a uniquely unsettling style of storytelling that aligns perfectly with the franchise’s legacy. If executed well, his vision could put the series back on the map.

3. A Return to Psychological Horror
Early footage suggests that the game is returning to its psychological roots, with a clear emphasis on mental anguish and an oppressive atmosphere which is exactly what long-time fans have been craving. Although combat still plays a role, it seems far less prominent than in its rival, Resident Evil. By leaning into its psychological strengths rather than action-heavy gameplay, Silent Hill f is poised to carve out a distinct niche within the horror genre.
4. A New Beginning
Bloober Team’s remake of Silent Hill 2 was undoubtedly one of the greatest games of 2024. Although a recreation, the developers faithfully modernised the adventure, improving numerous aspects. The latest iteration, however, is wholly new, setting it apart from its legacy. With f, Konami aims to break away from the western influences and embrace Japanese folklore to deliver a horror experience like no other.

5. A New Generation of Fans
A significant portion of gamers missed the franchise’s prime era, meaning their first real exposure came through Bloober Team’s acclaimed remake of Silent Hill 2. With that success reintroducing the series to a modern audience, Silent Hill f now has the chance to ignite a renewed wave of interest while capturing a new generation of fans. Blending demented creature design with a chilling focus on Japanese folklore, it stands poised to become the kind of rebirth that fans have long been dreading and desperately hoping for.
Silent Hill f isn’t just another sequel; it’s a reinvention that could be a bold step forward for the series. While trepidation exists due to previous outings, I am cautiously optimistic about the title and the future of the franchise. Releasing at the end of September, we don’t have long to find out.
