3 Up, 3 Down – The Best (And Worst) Games From May 2016

3 up, 3 Down May 2016 Edition

June is finally here. Summer holidays are right around the corner and in a matter of days, our COG E3 crew will be fully immersed in what is hyped to be the biggest E3 yet. June should be a great month as all the new announcements will have us frothing at the mouth for the latest and greatest in the video game world. But before we look too far ahead, I think it is safe to say we are easily coming off our best month of the year so far. Perhaps it’s the best month in recent memory. AAA games from Bethesda, Sony, 2K and Blizzard made for about the most memorable release month we have seen in this generation of consoles. On the flip side, May also saw the release of 4-year project which failed miserably. Without further delay, let’s get to the best and the worst from the month of May.

The Best List

Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End

Nobody should be shocked with this one, at all. Developer Naughty Dog threw everything they had at Uncharted 4 and the result is simply brilliant. We scored the game a perfect 100, which I don’t think we have ever done. Well, not in the last few years. For many, Uncharted 4 is not a perfect game but it is the best way we could have said goodbye to a beloved hero and to our beloved series. Rarely would we recommend the purchase of a console based on one game but in this case we absolutely can.

Overwatch

We called Overwatch a “meticulously detailed masterpiece” and our review score for Blizzard’s much-hyped project was off the charts. Just like Uncharted 4, Overwatch lived up to the hype. In fact, it exceeded it by a large margin. Many predicted Overwatch and Battleborn would be neck and neck; a close epic battle between two franchises for the ages. This wasn’t the case at all. Overwatch blew Battleborn out of the water clearly cementing itself as the must have arena shooter this calendar year.

Doom

Like Overwatch, Doom also went through a beta process. Yet unlike Overwatch, people weren’t too thrilled with it. I found the Doom beta too fast, movements felt unnatural and I didn’t find the multiplayer all that enjoyable. Well, something happened between the beta and Doom’s final release because the end product was fantastic! Two weeks after release, I am still playing the game hard and I don’t see myself putting it away anytime soon, it’s that good.
