3 Up, 3 Down – The Best (And Worst) Games From April 2016

3 up, 3 Down April 2016 Edition

In a little over a month from now, myself along with a few of us COG staffers will be sweating it out on the E3 show floor racing from one appointment to the next. It is sensory overload that absolutely destroys my feet. There is really no way to accurately describe the chaos, and exhaustion that is E3 week. With so many big announcements expected yet again, nobody at the show will be looking back at all the great games we have played so far this year. The roster of titles from the past month will be nothing but a distant memory, which is unfortunate as April surpassed my expectations. Nailing down the three best games from the past month was about as difficult as staying awake at a Tuesday morning Nintendo E3 press conference painfully hungover (a challenge I’ve faced a few times). Yet with every killer game, we test drove some lemons. So let’s get right to it as we break down the best and the worst from the past month.

The Best

Severed

Canadian developers DrinkBox studios have firmly established themselves as top tier talent in the industry. Their debut title, Tales from Space: About a Blob, was a highly polished platformer and Guacamelee! managed to sneak their way into nearly every gaming site’s game of the year awards not that long ago. Naturally expectations were high with their latest game Severed. True to form the studio delivered yet again with a game that could very well make our game of the year awards at the end of the year. Severed is that good and could be the last great game on the PS Vita. I guess we’ll see.

Nobody on our editing team was surprised to learn Dark Souls 3 made our best of the month list for April. You probably aren’t surprised either. What I think did catch everyone off guard was how much better Dark Souls 3 is compared to its predecessor. Dark Souls 3 is just so beautifully put together and is as punishing as ever. There are rage inducing moments. You’ll want to toss your controller and walk away. Yet when you do manage to make it past a particularly troubling boss, there isn’t much else more satisfying than that.

Ratchet & Clank

The movie is tanking at the box office and critics are ripping it apart. The movie is reported as unwatchable but the game that was released on the PS4 this past month is anything but. It’s a brilliant game. We loved this game so much we also threw together a video review. Whether you’re an old fan of the franchise or a new one, Ratchet and Clank on the PS4 is such a fantastic thrill ride. We called it a can’t miss PS4 game and for that reason it makes our best of the month list.
