The 3 Best and 3 Worst Games of October 2018

3 Up, 3 Down – October 2018 Edition

October is a spooky month, both for Halloween related reasons and in terms of game releases. There’s potential for very good, and the frightening reality of some hauntingly bad games. With September led by Spider-Man and Life is Strange 2, we march toward the inevitable holiday season with some of the most anticipated games of the year—now let’s take a look at the three best and worst games from October 2018.

It’s been a good last couple of months for games, with COG giving out one of our rare 100 ratings in September to Spider-Man and now, in October, to Red Dead Redemption 2. What can we say? It’s a damn good game, one that follows the story of an outlaw named Arthur Morgan as he and his gang struggle to score one last job in a world that’s quickly outgrowing them. Let’s not mince words—in our review we said it was “a masterpiece that transcends the current generation and elevates gameplay and storytelling to a level of which [that] is unprecedented.”

Yes, we get it. This game came out a while ago but we just reviewed it and felt it needed to be on our best list for the past month. Our world is oversaturated with indie 2-D platformers, and yet, despite that, Celeste shines through. Celeste is not only challenging and difficult to play, but rewarding to beat, with a deep and emotional storyline about a girl named Madeline and her quest to climb Celeste Mountain. One of the finest gaming experiences this year, we said in our review, “Celeste might not look it but, just like the mountain Madeline is so determined to conquer, it towers above the rest quite easily.”

Mega Man 11

Of the game, we said, “Mega Man 11 brings the series to new heights…yet, the core Mega Man formula remains largely unchanged.” Mega Man 11 is a good sign of things to come, and most importantly, a fun game to play.
