5. Horizon Forbidden West
Sony once again finds itself publishing a major sequel this year (and it won’t be the last on this list either). Guerilla Games was one of the many developers who had to push back their big release. Originally slated for August 15th, 2021, Horizon Forbidden West would now hit shelves in 2022. Its progenitor, Horizon Zero Dawn, made waves in 2017 as one of the PS4’s best exclusives since launch. Though the game was overshadowed by Sony’s 2018 banner year, which included God of War and Spider-Man, HZD is still a shiny feather in Sony’s cap. Its sequel will be hitting shelves just over a month from now, on February 18.
4. Hellblade 2: Senua’s Saga
Senua’s debut appearance in 2017’s Hellblade took fans on a thrilling trip into Celtic and Nordic folklore. The developers paired a cinematic journey through haunting environments with a consultant-backed simulation of psychosis, and ended up with a game that got the attention of Xbox. After Microsoft purchased developer Ninja Theory, the brand finally had a cinematic AAA experience, which was previously a gaping hole in their library of exclusives.
Ninja Theory has been providing fans with small glimpses of the game since development began. Appearing at the 2019 and 2021 Game Awards, the showcases revealed a stunning and startling world for Senua to battle through. The exact date Hellblade 2 will drop is unclear, but when it does, Game Pass subscribers will be in for an emotional epic.
3. Bayonetta 3
Fans have been speculating about whether Bayonetta 3 is near completion at all, but there’s good reason to believe it is. Since Nintendo has once or twice dropped games into the pits of delayed-game hell without so much as an acknowledgment, their reaffirmation of Bayonetta 3 is a good sign. Some naysayers and ne’er-do-wells may cite the silence from the developers, as a reason to be skeptical of the 2022 release. However, we remain hopeful that the release of Bayonetta 3 on the Nintendo Switch is imminent.
2. God of War: Ragnarok
Kratos slashed his way back on PlayStation in 2018 after a hiatus, and boy was it worth the wait. The soft reboot to the franchise, simply titled God of War, revamped the gameplay, setting, and tone of the series. These changes ultimately revitalized God of War and resulted in another universally acclaimed best-seller in Sony’s portfolio.
Despite originally aiming for the sequel to release in 2021, it seemed not even Greek Gods are immune from COVID. In June of 2021, Sony made the announcement that they pushed the coming sequel to 2022. Unfortunately for many fans, they would have to wait another year to step in Kratos’ paternal boots.
1. Breath of the Wild 2
No other title has gamers holding their breath quite like Nintendo’s long-awaited sequel to 2017’s smash hit. Released in conjunction with the switch console, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild climbed its way into many “Top Games of All Time” lists. The success of the first title led Nintendo to do something incredibly rare for the Zelda series: produce a direct sequel.
Nintendo hardly made a squeak about the game prior to 2021. Over the summer however, fans got their first glimpse at Link’s new adventure in Hyrule. Although many questions regarding the game still linger fans did get a release date, or rather, a release year. Now all eyes are on Nintendo to reveal exactly when players can expect to be gliding back into Hyrule.
