7. First Fight With Mia
After you first stumble upon your long lost wife, it feels as though Resident Evil 7 might not be as focused on horror as you first thought. That is until Mia turns out to be infected by some type of virus and violently hurls herself at you, poor old Ethan. The section is almost thrilling as the player is thrown through walls and Mia gets right up in your face. Looks like the honeymoon phase is over.
6. Cops Can’t Save You
Meeting the un-named cop for the first time may actually have been more terrifying than watching him die, as his elated whisper pierced through the spooky air as I tried to sneak around the house. After developing a bit of rapport, it was unexpected when good ol’ Jack decided to use a shovel to impale un-named Cop #1 and rip his head in half. I proobably shouldn’t be eating Doritos when playing a horror game.
5. First Time Meeting The Molded
The reveal of the Molded is equal parts scary and ingenious. Before that point, the player only deals with Jack and even then it is mostly in boss fight capacity. As the first molded enemy turned the corner after the player heads downstairs to get the third dog head key, I was immediately filled with dread. Their hulking 8 foot tall length and non-existent faces didn’t help. And being stuck in a room with three or four of them made the choice of pausing the game and restarting the checkpoint very easy.
4. Reveal of The Crawler Enemy
I don’t know what the hell these things are called, but that may be because I almost lost consciousness at their reveal. Similar to its Molded brethren, the crawlers first reveal in the tunnel is mortifying as Ethan piped, “What the f@%$. That’s special.” I don’t know if I would have been so composed in the same situation. Although I probably wouldn’t have gone off to save Mia in the first place so… yeah.
