Proceed With Caution: Scariest Video Games on Xbox Series X/S

Terrifying Adventures Await: The Scariest Video Games on Xbox Series X/S

Horror games have come a long way over the years. From simple pixelated graphics to immersive, cinematic experiences that can send shivers down your spine, the genre has evolved. As video game hardware advances featuring cutting-edge technology, horror gaming has gone to a whole new level. The Xbox Series X/S is approaching it’s third birthday and in just a few short years, several horror games have made a serious impact. In this article, we’ll explore some of the scariest video games on the Xbox Series X that will keep you on the edge of your seat.

Resident Evil Village

I am starting this list with Resident Evil Village because this game scared the bejeesus out of me. With stunning graphics, a hauntingly atmospheric village, and grotesque enemies, this game will make your palms sweat and the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. As Ethan Winters, you must navigate through a nightmare-inducing village while facing off against terrifying creatures and uncovering a dark mystery. The amazing visuals on the Xbox Series X make every encounter with Lady Dimitrescu and her daughters all the more chilling.

The Medium

Developed by Bloober Team, The Medium offers a unique dual-reality gameplay mechanic where players exist in both the spirit world and the real world simultaneously. It’s a cool concept and one that is terrifying as you play as a medium who has the ability to interact with the dead. In the game you’ll explore a haunted hotel and uncover disturbing secrets. The atmosphere is eerie and the soundtrack gives me chills. “The Medium” is just one of those horror experiences you think about days after putting down the controller.

Outlast: Trials

The Outlast series has always delivered the scares. I’ll admit, I have a tough time playing them. I just hate that hopeless feeling of some gruesome character chasing you down with nowhere to hide. It’s so stress-inducing! While not exclusive to the Xbox Series X, the console’s power enhances the game’s overall experience. Set in a twisted and horrifying asylum, Trials focuses on cooperative gameplay, where you and your friends can venture into hell together. Armed only with your wits and a flashlight, you’ll encounter enemies that’ll make you sh*t your pants. If you have anxiety issues, you might want to re-think this one.

Resident Evil 2

Back in 2019, we gave Resident Evil 2 a score of 90/100, and for good reason. It is a terrific and stunning reimagining of a survival horror classic. With breathtaking visuals, atmospheric lighting, and immersive sound design, the game takes advantage of the Xbox Series X/S hardware capabilities by delivering a truly terrifying experience. As Leon Kennedy or Claire Redfield, you must navigate the zombie-infested Raccoon City while uncovering a complex conspiracy. It features meticulously detailed environments and revamped gameplay mechanics. It is a spine-chilling journey that I highly recommend to Xbox owners looking for a spooky experience this fall.

Scorn

Granted, Scorn didn’t exactly blow reviewers away. Yet there is no question it features some grotesque creatures and has this unsettling environment that sends shivers down your spine. The Xbox Series X/S processing power highlights every gory detail. Scorn is certainly one of the most visually disturbing horror games to date. Sure, it has some flaws but this provocative nightmarish game is hard to put down.
