How Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Refines the Art of Sword Fighting

Resynced Refines Sword Fighting

Although Assassin’s Creed Black Flag is remembered for its naval battles, sword-fighting was also central to Kenway’s pirate odyssey. To truly capture the notion of being a buccaneer, Ubisoft made Edward a deadly swordsman whose fluid, brutal combat perfectly complemented his life as a pirate. With the chance to revisit the classic, Ubisoft refines the combat in Resynced to elevate the experience, and here’s how.

The Flow of the Fight

Encounters are much more fluid, allowing you to easily leap from enemy to enemy in order to overcome perilous situations. The original game features a counter-focused combat system. Now, however, fights are more dynamic. You can flow between enemies, parrying and dodging strikes to eliminate multiple foes. Rather than enemies simply waiting, they attack in different ways, requiring you to dodge, parry, and use some as human shields to remain unscathed. This forces you to react to situations like a highly skilled swordsman.

Pure Cinema

Kills are brutal, with blood squirting into the sky and staining the ground. These slick sequences capture the skill and finesse of a trained fighter, adding authenticity to your abilities. The environment is your friend – you can use this to give your adventurous battles an extra edge. Boot a guard off a ledge, slam them against the walls, or use destructible items to eliminate threats. Your options have grown, allowing you to take on the opposition in numerous new ways.

Weapon of Choice

In the original, you could pick up weapons off the ground and use these in bursts against your foes. Expanding on this, Resynced allows you to permanently equip different weapons, each with unique styles and attributes. Not only does this encourage experimentation, it also allows you to personalize your approach to combat. Whether you prefer a rapier, or a pistol and sword, there are more options than the original, which helps to improve battles.

A Quick Change

Quick Access items are also available to give you the edge in battles. Like previously mentioned, you can deliver a swift kick to launch enemies off rooftops – but that’s not all. With your dual welding pistols, you can take out multiple enemies in an instant, or pull your opponents into action with the rope dart. Combining these weapons in your inventory leads to exciting, fast-paced fights that capture the expertise of an assassin.

Ubisoft has put in a lot of effort to ensure the combat in Resynced remains similar to the original, but also improves aspects to deliver a stronger iteration of the classic. If you were unsure about the alterations made, don’t be. This is the game you remember and love but improved to take advantage of modern sensibilities and hardware. There are now more options to take on enemies and due to the improved AI, each encounter feels different, allowing you to adapt your tactics on the fly rather than relying on the same approach every time. Most importantly, it captures the spirit of the original without losing what made it special in the first place.
