Mystical Deserts Awaits in the King Is Watching Expands
The highly acclaimed roguelite kingdom builder The King is Watching continues to grow its empire with the release of its latest free update, “Shifting Sands,” now available on PC via Steam. Developed by Hypnohead and published by tinyBuild, the game has already surpassed 600,000 units sold, and this new expansion pushes players into an entirely new and unpredictable desert setting.
The update introduces vast, mystical deserts where shifting sands alter the battlefield in unusual ways, even pulling enemies across different points in time. Each run begins with a mix of familiar foes and fresh challenges, including powerful new bosses like the rebellious Monkey King and the fearsome Matriarch of Dragons. Players will also face the Fennecs, a tough desert-born enemy faction that adds another layer of danger.
A major highlight is the new Free Reign mode, which allows players to tweak over 40 different Danger Modifiers. These range from boosting spell damage to reviving enemies more quickly, offering greater control over difficulty and rewards. Players can also unlock new cosmetic skins, spells, and units through experimentation.
Endless Mode has also been reworked to provide a more engaging long-term experience, while improvements to the tutorial and early progression make it easier for newcomers to get started.
According to Hypnohead’s studio head Semyon Itmaniuk, the desert setting was an exciting direction for the team, and they are eager to see how players adapt to the new mechanics.
The “Shifting Sands” update is available now as a free addition, with the base game priced at $14.99. Overall, this update brings fresh energy to an already popular title, giving both new and returning players plenty of reasons to step back into the kingdom.
