Dark Scrolls Brings Retro Chaos to PC and Nintendo Switch This May

Retro 8-Bit Style Action Awaits in Dark Scrolls

Indie studio Doinksoft, known for titles like Gato Roboto and Gunbrella, has announced that Dark Scrolls will launch on PC and Nintendo Switch on May 28. Published by Devolver Digital, the game blends fast-paced action platforming with roguelite progression, creating a chaotic yet rewarding fantasy experience.

Dark Scrolls stands out with its diverse cast of nine playable characters. Players can pick from familiar archetypes such as a warrior, magician, or thief, while also experimenting with more unusual options like a dog, an alien, or even a saxophone-playing rat. Each character comes with unique abilities, side objectives, and customizable trinkets that allow for varied playstyles across runs.

The game leans heavily into retro inspiration, featuring pixel art visuals, classic sound effects, and music that echo older arcade titles. At the same time, modern controls and design choices keep the experience smooth and responsive. Levels are procedurally generated using handcrafted rooms, ensuring that every run feels different with new paths, enemies, and bosses to overcome.

Combat focuses on quick reflexes and precise timing. Players collect coins during runs and can spend them at in-game shops to unlock upgrades, powerful attacks, and helpful allies. Building the right combination of abilities can lead to large-scale destruction reminiscent of classic arcade moments.

With its mix of charm, challenge, and replayability, Dark Scrolls looks set to deliver a fresh yet nostalgic experience when it arrives later this month. If you want to learn more about it, then check out our official preview right here!
