Join the Action in Utawarerumono: ZAN 2
Shiravune has confirmed that Utawarerumono: ZAN 2 will finally make its way to PC via Steam, nearly five years after its original launch in Japan. First released for PlayStation 4 and 5 in 2021, the sequel reimagines the story of Utawarerumono Mask of Truth with real-time action combat in place of the series’ traditional tactical battles. The PC version will feature optimizations tailored for the platform and is already available for wishlist.

Much like the first ZAN, the follow-up condenses Mask of Truth into a faster-paced format, blending 3D cutscenes and dynamic visuals with the franchise’s well-known narrative. It features the full roster of characters and retells the dramatic conclusion of the mainline saga through a more action-driven lens. The shift from grid-based strategy to hack-and-slash combat provides a fresh perspective on the story, appealing both to longtime fans and newcomers curious about the lore.
ZAN 2 expands its systems in several ways compared to its predecessor. The redesigned Skill Board adds depth to character progression, while a new base system allows players to explore Oshtor’s estate, strengthen bonds, and enhance facilities using earned points. Dream Arena mode also returns, giving players additional challenges to tackle alone or with others in online co-op.
The developers have fully animated the cutscenes in 3D, replacing the static style of the original and giving pivotal moments greater cinematic weight. They have included support for English, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese, making the Steam release a more approachable entry point for players not ready to dive into the lengthy visual novel format. Although they have not yet confirmed localization changes, the game promises an action-heavy retelling of the series’ final chapter.
For players looking to catch up, the team will release Utawarerumono: ZAN on Steam on October 22, 2025.
