Island In The Mist
Cyan Inc. sure have been busy over the last little while – this month has seen early, unused assets from their puzzle-based MMO game Myst Online: Uru Live released, along with full playable prototype levels. Now, the Myst fandom have another event to add to their diaries – a remade and remastered version of Myst is coming to PC and Mac later this year.
This certainly isn’t the first time that Myst has gotten a remaster – Myst: Masterpiece Edition, realMyst: Interactive 3D Edition and realMyst: Masterpiece Edition have all brought new gameplay and graphics updates to the puzzle classic on the PC. The upcoming release of Myst, however, is a reworked version of the 2020 Oculus Quest port, complete with the puzzle randomization and VR support added in that port.
Cyan Inc consider the upcoming release of Myst to be their “definitive version” – it’s been remade from the ground up, without input from any other developers along the way. The Oculus edition of Myst was already the most user-friendly version of the game to date, with top-quality sound design and upgraded graphics adding to the immersive VR experience.
The Oculus edition also carries over a feature from the oft-maligned realMyst: Interactive 3D Edition with an overhaul of the gameplay – while the original Myst had set paths through its mysterious world, realMyst added free-roaming. Now that the upcoming PC and Mac releases have the options to play through the game without a VR headset, the best version of Myst is more accessible than ever before.
Myst is due to be released on PC and Mac in Q3 of this year, with possible releases on other consoles to be announced in the future. While the exact release date hasn’t been announced quite yet, Cyan Inc. say it’s “VERY soon”. It’s available to add to your wishlist on Steam and GOG now!
