Sea of Thieves Developer Releases Sea Shanty of Van Halen’s Jump

Might as Well Jump

No doubt that last week you have heard of Eddie Van Halen’s passing after his battle with cancer. As one of the most famous and influential guitar virtuosos of all time, Eddie Van Halen impacted people all over the world, including the video game world. Not only did Van Halen have their own Guitar Hero game in 2009, but their fans at Rare have put together a tribute to Eddie Van Halen. They made a sea shanty cover of Van Halen’s song Jump from their album 1984.

Sea of Thieves

The cover is available to listen to on Twitter. It uses instruments that are found in the world of Sea of Thieves such as basic drums, horns, and accordions. Of course, there is a gruff pirate singing the lyrics as well. It also wouldn’t be a true cover of a Van Halen song without a sick solo; someone definitely gave the accordion some credit for that. Jump is actually quite a departure from previous Van Halen songs. Its iconic synth melody was criticized by longtime Van Halen fans, despite it becoming one of the most popular songs of the 80s and arguably one of the band’s most popular songs.

Just like Eddie Van Halen, many people around the world battle cancer, so Rare has partnered with Stand Up to Cancer. The Sails of Union can be purchased by players, proceeds of which will be going to Stand Up to Cancer. The sails have been available since September 29th and will continue to be sold until November 6th. Sea of Thieves is available on PC and Xbox One.
